The king of kilts Zakk Wylde brought the Black Label Society to the Alamo city in support of their new album" Doom Crew Inc." which was released on Nov 26th. Along for the madness were New York City's groove metal band Prong and Tampa Florida's own death metal group Obituary.
Prong and Obituary both played killer heavy sets warming up the crowd for the main event. Finally, BLS is back in San Antonio after an unexpected one-year delay in plans. The super cool BLS banner goes up and the countdown begins. Looking around you can see a lot of "super fans" or fams as Zakk likes to call them wearing their BLS leather vests and patches. As the house sound gets louder and the lights go dimmer, we all know it's go time.
The banner drops and the band wastes no time melting faces launching into "Bleed for Me' and "Demise of Sanity "much to the delight of the fist-pumping BLS fans packed on the floor shoulder to shoulder. . Early highlights in the set included “Overlord” and “This Blessed Hellride". Guitar God Zakk Wylde spends half his time whipping his hair into a frenzy while shredding solos on a god pod, and the other in front of the skull-filled microphone stand/alter.
Halfway through the set Wylde showing his softer side sits behind the black grand piano that sits on stage left to play “In This River” a tribute to his late friend and fellow guitar shredder Dimebag Darrel Abbott. Banners with the faces of Dimebag and his brother Vinny, who drummed for Pantera and has also passed, appeared .onstage draped over speaker cabinets on either side of the stage. . Though a staple in BLS’ set, the night wouldn’t be complete without it. The edgy and grinding “Trampled Down Below” and “Destruction Overdrive” followed by a new song off of "Doom Crew Inc.", "Set you Free" would get the crowd's attention.
What's a rock show without a dueling guitar battle? Dario Lorina and Wylde would give all the guitar geeks in attendance something to talk about with a blistering display of guitar greatness. The set would end with "Suicide Massiah" and "Stillborn" from the 2003 album "The Blessed Hellride". Black Label Society are finally back Doom Trooping Over North America and sounding great!
