King Diamond kicked off his North American Headlining Tour in San Antonio Texas at Boeing Tech Port Center with Support from long-time metal masters Overkill and heavy metal power trio Night Demon.
Night Demon kicked things off with a heavy, powerful set on a very cramped dimly lit stage. Despite the obstacles, they brought an early 80s heavy metal sound reminiscent of a very early Metallica.
Long-time metal/thrash legends Overkill would take over the stage next performing a mixed bag of heavy metal offerings including crowd favorites" E.vil N.ever D.ies" and of course Subhuman cover "Fuck You"
Time for the main event. KING DIAMOND‘s thirty+ year musical career is one of the most storied in heavy metal history, but the tale is not yet over. King Diamond has been spooking people since the early 80s with an over-the-top stage production and his ghostly singing style. On this tour, King put together a super-talented group of musicians consisting of : guitarists Andy LaRocque and Mike Wead, bassist Pontus Egberg, and drummer Matt Thompson. Singer Myrkur will be singing back up vocals and playing organ on songs that require it.
After a curtain drop KING DIAMOND took the stage, which was a massive three levels in size and filled with smoke and washed out blue and red lights. King and company would kick things off with the driving "The Arrivial" followed by "A Mansion in Darkness" King and the band sounded polished and tight and the vocals were on point.
Those that are familiar with a King Diamond live show know that the live show is a story and Saint Lucifer’s Hospital is no exception. the story is about a crazy family on another timeline in 1920, where they experienced some hard times, and they have to come to our time to steal from us to survive. The performance is well done and the visuals are exceptional.
King would perform songs covering most of his music career including songs off of his most popular albums "Them", "Abigail" and "Fatal Portrait" What would a King Diamond show in October be without the holiday classic "Halloween"? No need to wonder it was performed. This being my first King show, I really didn't know what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised by the entire production. It was loud, entertaining, and overall a great musical performance. KING is currently in the studio working on the band’s next album which will be released in 2025.
