Nothing More finally made their return to the Alamo city with openers Atreyu and Eva on Fire in tow. Asking Alexandria was also on the bill but had to cancel the last few dates of the tour due to unforeseen circumstances. Nonetheless, there's no place like ho,me and the crowd at the brand new Tech Port Center Arena were ready to welcome the boys home.
Eva on Fire would open the show at a very early 6:30 with a great set of radio-friendly rock tunes, including a cover of Journey's "Separate Ways".
Metal veterans Atreyu we're up next with an in-your-face energetic, fun set, playing songs from their catalog including some new material. Singer Brandon Saller was entertaining, to say the least. Taking the time to introduce the super young crowd surfers to the audience. I'm sure it was a badge of honor for the youngsters.
Nothing More's Journey was full of countless cancellations and rescheduling due to you know what. After our show, there would be 1 more in Houston the following night ending the tour and starting the festival season.
As John Denver's "Take me Home-Country Roads" played in the arena and the lights went down I noticed puzzle looks on people's faces. With a thunderous thump, the show would be underway. Jonny Hawkins who demands your attention was spinning and jumping and running on stage making it a challenge to keep your eye on him. The energy of the band was evident from the get-go.
Nothing More started their set with a new song “Turn It Up Like (Stand in the Fire)” and continue into “Let ‘em Burn”.
Nothing More consists of vocalist Jonny Hawkins, guitarist Mark Vollelunga, bassist Daniel Oliver and drummer, Ben Anderson, went on to play a few older songs, “Do You Really Want It”, “Jenny”, and “Go to War” off of the first two albums.
The band brings a lot to their live performance with an awesome light show and lots to look at, including Johnny mounting "the scorpion tail". The scorpion tail is a contraption made out of miscellaneous auto, cycle, construction, and drum parts that somehow manages to move up and down and around but also control sound effects. Yeah, you would have to see it in action.
The 14-song setlist included a balanced mix of selections from 2017’s Grammy-nominated The Stories We Tell Ourselves and the previous release from 2013, the self-titled, Nothing More. Fans were treated to two new songs, the opening song “Turn It Up Like (Stand In Fire)” and the lyrical voyage of “Tired of Winning”. The band will be releasing a new single "Spirits" in a week or so, followed by the new album by the same name. If you haven't seen Nothing More live you owe it to yourself to check it out, it really is something to behold.
